Gussie Nell Davis celebration Oct. 8-9

by | Oct 8, 2021 | Latest, Uncategorized

One day in 1940, Gussie Nell Davis got a call from Kilgore College in East Texas to form a group that would perform at halftime of college football games. She took the job and founded the Kilgore Rangerettes, an organization that has become part of Texas small-town lore.

On Oct. 8-9, Davis’ hometown of Farmersville, where she was born and reared, is going to honor her memory with its first-ever — and possibly annual — Gussie Nell Davis Day. According to Farmersville City Councilman Terry Williams, who once served as one of the Rangerette managers, the celebration will commemorate an event that occurred in the autumn of 1970 when the city invited Davis to bring the Rangerettes to perform at halftime of a Farmersville High School homecoming football game.
