Farmersville will see two track and field athletes heading to the state championship after competing in the Region II-4A finals.
With the top two athletes in each event, plus the top third qualifier from across the four regions, all qualifying for state, the Lady Farmers had two athletes earn the qualification. Aubrey Varner led the way, winning the 800-meter regional championship (2:17.27) for her first state championship appearance.
Varner has been one of the top runners for the Lady Farmers this season, continually breaking the 800-meter track and field school record. She placed 13th in the 400 last season.
Also qualifying for state is senior Frances Dickerson, who finished second overall in the 300-meter hurdles (45.49). Dickerson has placed top two in the event in every meet she’s competed in this season, reaching state in her first season at Farmersville High School.
In total, Farmersville had athletes competing in six different competitions this season, including the 4×400 relay team of Varner, Dickerson, Baylee Valliant and Alexi Atchison which placed third (4:02.84) in the final heat. The team was less than a second off from gaining qualification for the state championship.
Varner and Dickerson will compete at the state championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on Thursday, May 11.
