Male powerlifters from Farmersville High School traveled three hours west to Abilene last week in search of a state championship.
For Rafe McComack, last Friday was a day that he won’t soon forget. He earned his way onto the medal stand after capturing second place at 148 pounds in the Division II state meet. He lifted a total weight of 1,480 pounds.
Mark Vasquez also cracked the top 10 for Farmersville. He earned ninth overall at 308 pounds with a 1,620-pound total.
Damian Gonzalez earned 11th in the 198-pound weight-class division with a total of 1,455 pounds lifted.
Orasio Juarez was 16th at 275 pounds with a total weight lifted of 1,545 pounds.
“Proud of the way these seniors competed at the state meet in Abilene,” said Christopher Anderson, Farmersville head coach. “Rafe bringing home a state runner-up medal as well as winning the Region 6 scholarship just demonstrates how well rounded, he is as an athlete.
“Mark, Damian, and Orasio all represented Farmersville High school well at the meet and all finished higher in the rankings at the meet than when they came into the meet, showing the hard work that they put in and to have it pay off.”
The senior class for Farmersville concluded one of the most successful four-year runs in program history. The Farmers won one regional team championship (2024), one regional runner-up (2025), multiple individual wins and qualified 13 lifters for state with three top three finishes.
“It will be hard to replace that level of success and leadership in our program,” Anderson said. “But we got a lot of hard-working younger lifters that will have to step up next year.”
