It’s been a red-hot start to the season for the Farmersville volleyball team.

On Tuesday, the Lady Farmers, ranked No. 8 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A state poll, improved to 10-1 following a dominant 25-13, 25-14, 25-18 home win over Edgewood.

The win came three days after Farmersville placed second in the Central Heights Tournament.

The Lady Farmers went 8-1 with wins over Robinson, Quitman, Gary, Arp, Diboli and Elysian Fields in pool play, White Oak in the championship bracket quarterfinals and North Hopkins in the semifinals.

Farmersville appeared to be well on its way to defeating Central Heights in the first-place match.

The Lady Farmers raced out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set after a service ace by senior Jad’yn Kirby. However, the Blue Devils weren’t fazed. Central Heights overcame the slow start and finished the first set on a 24-16 run.

The second set proved to be a much closer back-and-forth affair.

Central Heights held a 12-8 lead after a block, but Farmersville rallied to take a 20-18 lead after a big hit by junior Rylie Cottongame and took a 22-20 lead on a kill by junior outside hitter Peighton Purser.

Farmersville was later one point away from forcing a deciding third set. The Lady Farmers took a 24-22 lead after a bad pass by the Blue Devils. However, Central Heights scored the last four points of the set. The Blue Devils took a 25-24 lead with a service ace and a Central Heights block ended the match.

Cottongame and Purser were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“We had a great weekend,” said Arian May, Farmersville head coach. “It obviously wasn’t the ending we wanted, but the girls competed well over the weekend. In my opinion, you want to win every game, but we learned a lot from the championship game, and that is going to help us a lot in our future games. We know we have a tremendous amount of competition ahead of us and we are ready for it.”
