For the third consecutive season, the Farmersville boys cross country team has qualified for the regional meet.
The Farmers achieved the feat by finishing in third place with 58 points at the District 13-4A meet at Wills Point on Monday morning. Sunnyvale, with 38 points, was crowned the district champion. Wills Point, with 49 points, also qualified for the Region II-4A meet.
Sophomore Landen Ware led a balanced effort for Farmersville. He placed ninth with a time of 17:54. Sophomore Drew Crum also cracked the top 10, finishing in 10th place with a 17:57.
All seven runners for the Farmers completed the 5-kilometer course in less than 19 minutes.
Juniors Landon Green (18:15), Travis Chambers (18:20) and Luke Lair (18:32) finished in 12th, 13th and 14th place, respectively, while senior Miller Meeks (18:44) placed 15th and freshman Jesse Hamm (18:45) captured 16th place.
“We had hopes of finishing higher so the kids left a little disappointed, but that just shows how far we’ve come,” said Jon Nordin, Farmersville head boys coach. “Our strength is our depth, and we hoped that would be enough to push us over the top, but it wasn’t meant to be this time. A lot of them ran good races and there’s never been a day where I question their effort.”
They will be joined at the regional meet by junior Breelynn Pollard. Pollard continued her dominant season by placing second at the district meet in the girls 3,200-meter race with a time of 13:34.17.
“Breelynn got out to a great start and held her position near the front of the pack throughout the entire race,” said Sandra Hoge, Farmersville head girls coach. “I really liked how confident and composed she looked — she attacked the course with focus and determination from start to finish.
Wills Point senior Zerena Martinez won first place with a 12:56.98.
The Region II-4A meet is set for Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Harold Patterson Sports Complex in Arlington. The girls race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the boys race at 9:30 a.m.
