A new monument sign at the Onion Shed now stands as a tribute to Farmersville’s unique agricultural past — when the city was once known as the Onion Capital of North Texas.
Local historian Linda Hess gathered details of this history from a 1926 Dallas Morning News article by agricultural editor Victor H. Schoffelmayer, titled “Blackest Land, Whitest Onions, in Collin County.” The piece praised Farmersville farmers for a then-innovative practice — cultivating onions and cotton in the same rich, black soil.
