Less than 24 hours prior to Saturday’s regular-season finale against Bonham, the formula for making the playoffs became slightly more complicated for the Farmersville boys soccer team.
Celina upset District 11-4A champion Frisco Panther Creek 3-2 Friday night, a win that bumped the Bobcats’ point total to 28 — two ahead of Farmersville (26) for 11-4A’s final postseason berth.
That result didn’t faze Farmersville.
The Farmers played with the necessary desperation Saturday, scoring two goals in the first five minutes before earning a playoff-clinching 5-0 win over the Warriors at Farmers Stadium. The Farmers are playoff-bound for the second consecutive season and for just the second time in the program’s history.
“I watched Celina’s whole game on the streaming online feed,” head coach Barrett Clark said. “I wasn’t nervous because I knew that if we took care of business today, we would be fine. The playoffs were in our hands. I was confident that things would end up our way.”
Farmersville will play Sunnyvale in the bi-district round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs — a rematch of last year’s first-round matchup, won by the Raiders, 3-2. The rematch will take place at 7:30 tonight at Farmers Stadium.
“I feel like our team is more prepared this year than last year,” Clark said.
