For a moment, Farmersville senior Ethan Stone wasn’t sure if his time of 48.64 seconds was fast enough to qualify for the Class 4A state track and field championships in the 400-meter run.

With only the top two finishers earning an automatic berth in the state meet, Stone had to wait on the final results from the other three regions to see if his time would earn a wild card.

The wait was worth it.

Stone earned a wild card and will compete in the state meet, set for Thursday, May 14, at Mike A. Myers Track and Field Stadium in Austin. Running events for 3A and 4A are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Farmersville nearly had a second state qualifier.

Breelynn Pollard, a junior, took third place in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:38.67. However, she came up just short of qualifying for state. Her time was faster than the third-place finishers in two other regions but eight seconds slower than that of another region. She also finished ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:37.47 at the Region II-4A meet at East Texas A&M University in Commerce last week.

Amare Warren, a junior, turned in a respectable fourth-place finish in the boys triple jump with a leap of 45-4 and teamed with Owen Gates, Ethan Stone and Sam Stone to finish ninth in the boys 4×100 preliminaries in 42.65.

Ameera Warren, also a junior, took 10th in the 200 and teamed with Syah Surles, Aaliya Corzine and Chloe Jones to finish in 14th place in the girls 4×100 preliminaries with a time of 50.18.
