The Farmersville Police Department is seeking additional funding to expand its network of Flock public safety cameras, a request that prompted discussion among Farmersville Economic Development Corp. (‘FEDC’) board members about funding options, legal authority and privacy concerns.
Police Chief Marsha Phillips presented the request during the corporation’s July meeting, asking for assistance with offsetting the second year’s maintenance costs for the department’s existing Flock camera system while outlining plans to eventually expand coverage to parks, trails and other high-traffic public areas.
The department currently operates four Flock cameras positioned at entrances to the city. According to Phillips, the cameras were initially purchased by the city, but annual maintenance costs total approximately $3,000 per camera.
