One week after capturing first place in the Central Heights Tournament, the Farmersville volleyball team returned to the comforts of Farmersville Arena to compete in its home tournament, the Top of Texas Tournament.
Farmersville, which entered last week ranked No. 2 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A state poll, posted four wins on its home court – all in straight sets. Overall, the Lady Farmers finished 4-4 over the duration of the three-day event.
To commence the tournament, Farmersville earned a 2-0 sweep of Wink (25-20, 26-24), though the Lady Wildcats proved to be a tough team to close out.
Farmersville won a nip-and-tuck first set after a Nidya Duran serve bounced off the right hand of a Wink defender in the back row.
The Lady Farmers carried over that momentum to the second set. Farmersville appeared to be in control, but Wink cut a 19-12 deficit to 21-19. Kills by Brinlea McDole and Peighton Purser put the Lady Farmers back in the driver’s seat, but the Lady Wildcats rallied to tie the score at 24-24 after blocking two straight hitting attempts by Farmersville.
Purser got Farmersville back on track with an emphatic kill on the ensuing point and a Wink hitting error that followed completed a two-set victory for Farmersville.
The competition continued to be fierce for Farmersville (15-5).
After dropping the first set to its next opponent, Van Alstyne, Farmersville turned to its defense to swing the momentum.
A diving dig by McDole was followed by a block by Aaliya Corzine for an 8-3 lead in the second set.
Van Alstyne strung together a run to reduce the deficit to two points midway through the set, but a long run behind the service line by McDole helped Farmersville to turn back the rally and level the proceedings at one set apiece.
Farmersville’s resilience was put to the test in the third set. The Lady Farmers showed plenty of fight in overcoming an early three-point deficit and several one-point deficits, with a string of points behind the service line by Breelynn Pollard giving Farmersville a 23-19 lead.
However, Van Alstyne scored the match’s final six points to stun Farmersville, with the Lady Wildcats earning a 25-22, 20-25, 25-23 victory.
Farmersville bounced back and won its next three matches, posting two-set sweeps of Clyde, Spring Hill and Maypearl.
The Lady Farmers continued to show a lot of fight, but they came up on the short end in each of their final three matches in their home tournament, falling to Caddo Mills, Gunter and Sulphur Springs – all in three sets.
Farmersville traveled to Lindsay on Aug. 18 but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 25-19, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18 loss to the Lady Knights.
