Old Time Saturday will return Oct. 3 for its 46th year, bringing back two traditions that put Farmersville residents young and old in the spotlight.
The long-standing Little Mr. and Miss Old Time Saturday fundraiser will again give local children a chance to earn a place in the festival parade, while the newer Silver Centennial Citizen program will recognize a community member age 65 or older.
Dustin Tarrant, event director and former Little Mr. Old Time Saturday, said the exact origins of the Little Mr. and Miss tradition are unclear, but it dates to the festival’s early years.
“It originally started out as a boy and girl were voted by their classmates, so each class had a boy and girl representative,” Tarrant said. “The girl and boy who sold the most tickets won Little Mr. and Miss Old Time Saturday.”
Today, Farmersville children in pre-K through sixth grade, including homeschool and academy students, can sell raffle tickets for a chance to appear in the Old Time Saturday parade.
Raffle sales continue through Thursday, Oct. 1. This year, tickets can also be purchased online by scanning a QR code on the event’s Facebook page. The winner can choose between $500 cash or a pair of Meta Ray-Ban glasses.
Tarrant said the amount raised through Little Mr. and Miss fundraiser varies from year to year with a record of $18,000 raised in 2023. Funds raised benefit community organizations.
More recently, organizers expanded the tradition of recognizing community members during the festival.
The Silver Centennial Citizen program, introduced four years ago, honors an adult age 65 or older who lives, works or is active in the Farmersville community.
Nominations will open Friday, Sept. 11, on the Old Time Saturday Facebook page and remain open for several weeks. The field will then be narrowed to five finalists for a public vote.
The winner will be recognized during a brief ceremony before receiving a special place in the Old Time Saturday parade.
