Learning opportunity for older adults docks in Farmersville

by | Jan 15, 2022 | Education, Latest

The addition of the SAIL program at the Farmersville Collin College campus presents a new and specialized learning and sharing opportunity for local and area senior citizens. SAIL, is an acronym for SENIORS ACTIVE IN LEARNING.

The program, for students 55 years and older, celebrates its 25thanniversary this year, and its first year at the new Farmersville campus. The campus is located at the corner of Audie Murphy Parkway (U.S. 380) and County Road 611.

SAIL participants meet for the joy of new learning experiences and becoming more informed about a wide spectrum of subjects.  The SAIL community includes talented instructors, college professors, and business leaders with expertise in the subject matters they teach.

Students learn from each other, hear and consider opposing ideas, integrate the expertise of the instructor, and ultimately gain new knowledge, opinions, and points of view.

No degree or academic experience is required because all classes are non-credit, with no tests, grades, or papers to write.  There are no residency requirements and participation in SAIL also includes optional special social events and guest lectures.

Collin’s SAIL program director is Sherry J. Scamardo and she is excited about extending its reach to the area.

“We are pleased to have the SAIL program active at the Farmersville campus and anticipate many senior citizens will participate in this unique learning and sharing experience,” she said.

Cost for enrollment is $100 per semester, normally for up to seven courses, although the current Spring 2022 semester has unlimited courses. Guest lectures do not count toward the maximum course load.

The college offers a combination of in-person and virtual (zoom) learning opportunities. In addition to the Farmersville campus, courses are also available at the Collin College Courtyard Center, Frisco Campus, Collin Higher Education Center and the Wylie Campus.

Course topics fit into a number of subject matter groups including Arts and Art History, Current Events Discussions and Lectures, Games, Health/Lifestyle/Wellness, History, Informative Courses, Language/Travel, Literature/film/Music and Math/Science/Technology.

Four online courses will be offered at the Farmersville Campus. They are Reconstructing the Red River Valley, Abraham Lincoln and His Legacy, Body Works 101: Integumentary System, and Live Healthy, Stay Young at Heart.

The one in-person class offered at the Farmersville Campus is Cruising Through the Panama Canal, which will meet Wednesdays, Feb 2 and 9 at 1:30-2:30 p.m. The class will be taught by long-time Farmersville resident, retired Air Force Col. Charlie Tucker.

A complete schedule and listing of courses and locations offered for the Spring semester, as well as information about enrollment and special guests lectures can be found at www.Collin.edu/sail.

The SAIL office can be reached at 972-985-3788.  For more information about the Farmersville campus SAIL program, contact the campus Executive Dean, Diana L. Hopes, Ed.D.
