Lady Farmers complete perfect district season

by | Apr 26, 2022 | Latest, Sports

Not much has challenged the Lady Farmers softball team this season, as they won the District 13-4A title in dominating fashion.

No. 24 Farmersville (12-0, 19-6) completed their perfect run in district play with two more victories. The Lady Farmers have won 13 straight games to end the year, cruising without a single contest coming within four runs. Head coach Paula Wilfong said she was proud of the team’s effort in the final stretch of the season.

“I was so proud of them for taking care of business throughout the whole season,” Wilfong said. “We don’t carry a very full team, so through injuries, scheduling conflicts with track and tennis, we did a really good job of sticking through adversity.”

The top seed pits Farmersville against Athens in the bi-district round of the state playoffs. With scheduling conflicts with prom and other events this week, the Lady Farmers will play a one-game, winner-take-all contest against the Lady Hornets on Thursday night at Royse City High School. Despite the difficulties, coach Wilfong is confident in her side.

“They definitely met my expectations this season and I still don’t think we’ve peaked as a softball team,” Wilfong said. “Going into this one game, I think we can put it all together and shine on the same night. We should be able to get it done and advance.”

Farmersville opened last week with an 11-1 win over Caddo Mills on April 19 at Community High School. Farmersville actually trailed to start the game, giving up a run in the top of the first inning but took over from there.

Jamie Varga opened the game with a single, followed by Morgan Erwin’s RBI triple to tie the game. Carleigh Deeds then doubled Erwin in, followed by Bella Holland’s RBI double as well. When the dust settled, it was 3-1 Lady Farmers and they never looked back.

Varga was a force for the Lady Raiders this week. In two games, she drove in eight runs while hitting 6-for-7 at the plate. She picked up two wins in the circle, allowing zero earned runs and striking out 13 batters. She ended the game against Caddo Mills with a three-run inside-the-park home run along with five strong innings of pitching.

Farmersville followed up the first game with a season-ending 17-3 victory over Terrell on April 22.

The Lady Farmers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before adding six runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to end the game by the mercy rule. Varga hit her second home run of the week, while Jenson McTee had two extra-base hits and two RBIs and Erwin added three RBIs.

Despite the strong performance, the Lady Farmers committed four errors in the game, which led to the three Terrell runs. Coach Wilfong highlighted that as a key to the Lady Farmer’s success in the postseason.

“Athens is going to put the ball in play better than we’ve seen at times in district this season,” Wilfong said. “Once they’ve seen Jamie a few times through the order, they’re capable of putting the ball in play, so it’ll be crucial for our defense to be consistent and at the top of their game this week.”

If Farmersville wins against Athens, they’ll play in the area round the following week on a day to be determined. Continue to follow The Farmersville Times online for further updates.
