Farmersville’s girls’ powerlifting team made their mark at the THSWPA Class 4A Division II state equipped championships last Friday, with two Lady Farmers standing out on the medal stand.
P.J. Capetillo and Sophia Ferretiz both earned top-5 finishes in the 4A Division II finals from Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
Capetillo took the state runner-up spot in the 132-pound division, lifting a total of 915 pounds. Her impressive performance included a 380-pound squat, a 205-pound bench press, and a 330-pound deadlift.
For Capetillo, this year marked the second time that she competed in the state meet. She finished 11th last year and came into last week’s meet ranked No. 6 in the state in her weight class.
“P.J. was actually ranked fifth coming in, and she had a great meet,” said John Searson, Farmersville head coach. “She struggled in her first two squats and got a PR on her third one. She kept fighting to try and catch up to the girl in front of her but couldn’t quite get there, but P.J. did fantastic. She was really focused on getting back to state and also wanted to medal.”
Ferretiz, meanwhile, earned fifth place at 220 pounds in her first state appearance.
She finished with a total weight lifted of 925 pounds. She had a bench press of 195 pounds, squatted 395 and had a deadlift of 335.
“Sophia was further down the list at 12 or 13 going into state,” Searson said. “She had a fantastic meet. She’s a first-year lifter. Even at the meet, she still doesn’t know strong she can me. When she was on the deadlift, I told her that if you want to get fifth place, you’ll have to pull some weight. She did just that.”
Capetillo and Ferretiz are the first state placers for the Lady Farmers since 2023 when P Mara Juntado earned third place and Phoebe Attaway captured fifth place.
