McKINNEY, Texas — A Collin County resident has tested positive for measles, and local health officials are warning the public about a potential exposure at a Walmart in Frisco.
Collin County Health Care Services said the individual visited the Walmart located at 16066 State Highway 121 on April 29 between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The department advises that anyone who was at the store during that time may have been exposed to the virus.
Measles is a highly contagious airborne illness that can be transmitted by respiratory droplets or from contaminated surfaces. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
Health officials are urging anyone who was at the store during the specified time and is unvaccinated, pregnant or immunocompromised to contact a healthcare provider immediately. Others who may have been exposed are advised to monitor for symptoms through May 20.
Measles symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, red or inflamed eyes, and small white spots with bluish centers inside the mouth, known as Koplik’s spots. A rash typically appears several days after early symptoms and usually begins on the face before spreading.
