Seven days after Farmersville rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat Blue Ridge in overtime, the Fightin’ Farmers were forced to dig themselves out of another multi-score deficit on Friday.
Yet, for as much as Farmersville tried, a 23-yard touchdown pass by Pottsboro on a third-and-14 play during the fourth quarter proved to be the backbreaker for the Fightin’ Farmers during a 38-17 road loss to the Cardinals at Jim Henderson Memorial Stadium.
On the play, Pottsboro (1-1) senior quarterback Brayden Sheffield scrambled to his left and the Fightin’ Farmers (1-1) were unable to make a tackle on a Cardinal wide receiver – a play which resulted in a touchdown and gave Pottsboro a 38-17 lead.
“I thought that we stayed in it most of the night until that moment,” said Farmersville head coach Zac Quinlan. “We didn’t make the plays that we did last week.”
Junior Brandt Martinez, who recorded the game-winning touchdown in the opener against Blue Ridge, finished with 157 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns. His first touchdown, a run of three yards, got the Fightin’ Farmers on the board. Felix Maldonado’s ensuing PAT kick reduced Farmersville’s deficit to 10-7.
Farmersville also received a boost on the outside as senior wide receiver Amare Warren played in his first game of the 2026 season. He caught seven passes for 103 yards. Senior quarterback Levi McAbee completed 11 of 21 through the air and added 42 rushing yards on 10 carries.
But Pottsboro answered every Farmersville score with one of its own.
Farmersville will look to get back into the win column this Friday at Ponder (1-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ponder ISD Football Stadium.
