Facing a 28-10 halftime deficit, it could have been easy for the Farmersville Fightin’ Farmers to lay down.
But the Fightin’ Farmers refused to quit.
That determination was evident during a furious second-half rally in which Farmersville took two leads. However, a 7-yard touchdown run by Pilot Point running back Josh Chumley and subsequent 2-point conversion run by Chumley with one minute remaining proved to be the difference as the Bearcats sent the Fightin’ Farmers to a heartbreaking 44-43 loss at Farmers Stadium on Friday.
Chumley proved tough to stop, rushing for 296 yards on 30 carries with four touchdown runs, although he fumbled twice. Pilot Point (4-1) finished with 461 total yards of offense, including 389 yards rushing.
Farmersville (2-3) had one more chance to mount a comeback. However, the Fightin’ Farmers’ offense was unable to get on the field. The kickoff following Chumley’s touchdown run was muffed by Farmersville, and Pilot Point recovered at the Fightin’ Farmers’ 23-yard line. The Bearcats then ran out the remaining time on the game clock.
Two-point conversions played a key role in the final score. Farmersville failed on both of its 2-point tries in the second half, while Pilot Point went 2-for-2 on 2-point attempts over the game’s final two quarters.
Chumley’s touchdown and 2-point run came after Farmersville had taken a 43-36 lead with four minutes remaining on a 3-yard touchdown run and PAT kick.
Fightin’ Farmers running back Brandt Martinez finished with 191 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Levi McAbee rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns and also threw for 171 yards and one touchdown.
Farmersville is now on a bye week. The Fightin’ Farmers will host Sunnyvale (4-1) on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. to kick off District 7-4A Division II play at Farmers Stadium.
