The community is mourning the death of Farmersville student who was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on North State Highway 78.
Melody Newhouse, a sophomore at Farmersville High School, was a passenger in a northbound vehicle involved in the collision. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a crash report provided by the Farmersville Police Department, the northbound vehicle was traveling on Highway 78 when another vehicle turning onto County Road 616 crossed into its path. The northbound vehicle struck the turning vehicle in the passenger-side fender, causing it to lose control and spin. The turning vehicle was pushed into a grassy embankment.
The driver of the northbound vehicle, in which Newhouse was a passenger, had to be extricated and was taken to Medical City McKinney with severe injuries, according to the report. The driver of the turning vehicle suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Medical City McKinney.
The northbound vehicle sustained extensive damage and briefly caught fire following the collision. Passing motorists extinguished the fire, according to the report.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Farmersville ISD notified families and the school community Friday evening. In a statement, the district remembered Newhouse as a creative and curious student who brought enthusiasm and a sense of possibility to campus.
“Melody brought creativity, curiosity, and hope for the future to her time at Farmersville High School,” the district said.
Newhouse participated in several honors courses and had a wide range of interests, including writing, origami, engineering and Spanish. She also dreamed of one day starting her own YouTube channel, according to the district.
The district said Newhouse was deeply loved by students and staff and extended its condolences to her family, friends, classmates and teachers.
Counselors are available to support students and staff as the school community mourns.
Visitation for Newhouse is from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4 at Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at First Baptist Church.
