Class 4A state power Sunnyvale didn’t need much offensive help in its District 7-4A Division II opener against Farmersville, but the Fightin’ Farmers provided plenty. Three turnovers deep in Farmersville territory helped the visiting Raiders roll to a 62-21 victory.
Twice in the first quarter, Farmersville miscues — including a dropped punt snap on fourth down and a quarterback fumble — gave Sunnyvale a short field. The Raiders took advantage of the opportunities to build a commanding lead.
“We did some things that were uncharacteristic for us with turnovers and like the good team that they are, they certainly took advantage,” said Farmersville head coach Zac Quinlan.
Sunnyvale improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in district play, with its only loss coming against state-ranked Gilmer. The Raiders led 31-0 after the first quarter and never looked back, with star quarterback Cayson Maupin making plays through the air and on the ground before Sunnyvale rotated in backup players during the second half.
The Farmers capped a 70-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Levi McAbee to Amare Warren, who caught the ball on the right side of the end zone. Felix Maldonado added the extra point to make it 31-7.
Sunnyvale scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter, with Farmersville answering in between. Warren caught his second touchdown pass of the game with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter, hauling in a 42-yard pass from McAbee to make it 52-14.
Farmersville’s final score came late in the fourth quarter, when McAbee and Warren connected for a third touchdown, this time on a 15-yard pass. Maldonado added the extra point.
