School board approves submission for grant funds

by | May 27, 2021 | Education, Latest

The Farmersville ISD board had a short meeting Monday evening – 11 minutes – with just a few items in a light agenda.

No one spoke during open forum, and trustees approved the consent agenda before moving on to the business session, which had just three items.

The three items on the business session were a report on the continuing education hours of board members, depository contracts and a submission of grants for federal funds.

Each of the seven board members has completed the required number of hours, according to a district document. On the depository contract, the board approved continuing with Independent Financial. The other proposal came from CBTx Bank.

On the submission of grants, the board approved authorizing the administration to submit grants for Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)/Title programs/Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). While both are federal funds, ESSER funds come from the CARES Act from 2020. ESSER seeks to address areas in schools that have been affected by COVID-19.

“Right now, we run our title programs through Region 10 (Education Service Center) and they take a percentage of our money for doing the application,” Farmersville Superintendent Micheal French said. “We end up still doing the monitoring and all the drawdowns and everything. What we’re talking about doing is bringing it in house and saving that money and then we’ll actually have more control of how the money is spent at that time.”
