Local veterans traverse around the square as part of last year’s Audie Murphy Day festivities. The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23 followed by a program at the Onion Shed in Farmersville.

This Audie Murphy Day, along with honoring the memory of World War II hero Audie Murphy, a special recognition will also happen for another hometown hero: Thomas Glenn Caraway.

“Audie Murphy Day is our opportunity to honor the memory of our most decorated war hero of World War II. It allows us to reflect and remember the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedoms just like Thomas Glenn Caraway did,” VFW Post member and State POW/MIA Chairman Darrell Moore said.

Caraway was the first soldier from Farmersville killed in the Vietnam War Nov. 28, 1967, and the namesake for Farmersville VFW Post 7426.
