Rotary clubs in all corners of the globe have something in very much in common: They are looking high and low for new members to join their organization to serve the communities where they live, work and worship.
The Farmersville Rotary Club, therefore, is launching a membership drive in April with the aim of expanding its “stable” roster of members, according to club president Jason Gomez.
“For the month of April,” Gomez said, “we’re going to encourage our members to invite guests to our weekly meetings, to show them what Rotary is all about.”
Gomez, who serves as deputy superintendent for the Farmersville Independent School District, called Rotary “a great place for fellowship and service and we want to expose guests to a commitment-free environment just to see what we have to offer.”
The Farmersville Rotary Club currently has 30 members. Gomez calls that number “pretty stable. Yes, we have members come and go.” Some longtime Rotary Club members have returned to the weekly meetings after clearing up some business affairs that had kept them away, Gomez explained. The COVID pandemic of 2020-21 took its toll on Rotary membership internationally, as it did all service clubs.
The Farmersville Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at noon at the O.C. Carlisle Civic Center on Orange Street. The club has what it calls a “skip week,” which is the second Tuesday each month in which it doesn’t have a meeting.
Past membership drives have produced “a few new Rotary Club members,” Gomez said, and he expects this one to be a success in that regard, hoping that those who know nothing or just a little about Rotary will be inclined to join the club.
Gomez also seeks to invite anyone who is interested in attending a club meeting to join the Rotary Club for lunch on Tuesday. “Anyone is welcome to attend,” he said, “and we want to be able to invite someone specifically to join if they show an interest in membership.”
Gomez said that although club membership has been static in recent years, the club has seen an uptick in weekly attendance.
The membership drive will continue through April and the club will offer prizes to members who bring the most guests to lunch, Gomez said.
Gomez will serve as club president until June 30. He then will hand the duties of his office over to Farmersville insurance executive Jake Buchanan, who takes office on July 1.
The Farmersville Rotary Club meets Tuesday at noon at the O.C. Carlisle Civic Center. Those interested in joining the Farmersville Rotary Club may call club president Jason Gomez at Farmersville ISD, (972) 784-6011.
