Freshen up for Spring: What to know before you paint outside

by | Feb 19, 2026 | Life & Style

After months of winter weather, spring is the season when homeowners start noticing everything the cold left behind — peeling paint, faded trim and siding that looks a little worse for wear. Exterior painting isn’t just about curb appeal; it’s also one of the most effective ways to protect a home from moisture, heat and long-term damage. With a little planning, spring can be the ideal time to tackle the job.

Timing matters. Mild temperatures and lower humidity help paint adhere properly and cure evenly. Most professionals recommend waiting until daytime temperatures stay consistently above 50 degrees, with no overnight freezes in the forecast. Avoid painting too early in the morning when dew may still be present and keep an eye on rain chances for at least 24 hours after application.

Preparation is the most important — and often most overlooked — step. Before a brush or roller ever touches the surface, exterior walls should be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, pollen and mildew. Scraping away loose or peeling paint and sanding rough spots helps create a smooth surface that allows new paint to bond effectively. Any damaged wood, cracked caulk or exposed areas should be repaired before painting begins.

Choosing the right paint is just as critical as proper prep. High-quality exterior paints are designed to withstand Texas heat, UV exposure and sudden weather changes. Premium brands such as Benjamin Moore offer products formulated for durability, color retention and mildew resistance — all key factors for North Texas homes. The right finish also makes a difference: flatter finishes can help hide surface imperfections, while satin or semi-gloss paints are often preferred for trim because they’re easier to clean.

Color selection deserves careful thought as well. Lighter shades can help reflect heat, while darker hues may fade faster under intense sun. Many homeowners use spring as an opportunity to update their palette with fresh, modern tones that still complement surrounding homes and landscaping.

For those unsure where to start, local experts can be a valuable resource. Paint specialists can help homeowners select the right products, finishes and quantities for their specific projects — whether it’s a full exterior refresh or a smaller trim update.

With the right preparation, materials and timing, a fresh coat of paint can do more than brighten a home’s exterior — it can help protect it for seasons to come.
