Veterans Day events on tap this weekend

by | Nov 9, 2018 | Latest

Those wanting to honor veterans this weekend are invited to several different area events.

Farmersville Independent School District is inviting all veterans and community members to participate in Veterans Day ceremonies and activities Friday, Nov. 9.

Activities kick off at 8:05 a.m. at Tatum Elementary School with a flag raising ceremony.

At 8:30 a.m., there will be a free veterans breakfast at Farmersville High School. A program honoring the veterans will be held at 9 a.m. at the high school.

Activities are open to all veterans and active duty personnel.

To RSVP for breakfast call Barbara Dryer at 972-782-6601.

The Farmersville VFW Post 7426 Auxiliary will be hosting a Family Freedom Fest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the post in honor of Veterans Day.

This will be a free event with games for kids and booths for adults plus a cakewalk and hotdogs and bottled water for all.

There will also be a raffle for $1 each for a girl’s and boy’s bike to be given away at the close of the event.

At First United Methodist Church in Farmersville, there will be a special service honoring veterans at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

Veterans, active duty and their families are welcome to attend this special church service.

In Princeton, there will be a community-wide ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Cadets in the Princeton High School Junior ROTC unit will present the colors during the ceremony, the PHS band will plan the national anthem and a medley of patriotic songs, and veterans will carry flags representing each United States military branch.

Everyone is invited to attend, organizers said. VFW members will also be handing out Buddy Poppies throughout the weekend.

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, it noted the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at 11 a.m. that ended World War I hostilities. The name was changed in 1954 to honor all military veterans.

Veterans are also welcome to stop by the VFW Post to receive a free barbecue dinner from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. The dinner is being provided in conjunction with T-Mobile.

Proof of veteran status is required such as VA card.

The post is located at 601 N. 4th Street.
