Farmersville residents who have dogs and cats will now be required to register their pets.
According to Animal Control officer Karen Dixon, though pet registration has been part of Farmersville’s Code of Ordinances for a long time, enforcement has not been done.
“We are doing this because of the amount of missing dogs we are picking up,” she said.
This step is mandatory for those who live within the city limits. It is $15 for pets that have been spayed or neutered and $25 for those that are not.
Those registering their pets must provide up-to-date shot records and if at all possible, animal control would like a photo of the pet.
Each pet will be receiving a tag for its collar with a corresponding number.
Extended hours will be offered at the public safety building on Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to offer residents an easier day to register their pets.
Pets can also be registered every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. including lunchtime Monday through Friday.
“With so many new people in town we would rather take pets back to their owner rather than transport them to the pound,” Dixon said.
The public safety building is located at 134 N. Washington Street.
