Big Tex isn’t the only crowd favorite at the 2016 State Fair of Texas. On Tuesday, Oct 4, a new man on the fairgrounds stole the show. Jarren McTee, from Farmersville competed in the Youth Market Barrow Show and took home not only an eighth place ribbon, but the spotlight as well.

10-year-old McTee has a medical condition known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). HIE is defined as damage to the cells of the central nervous system from inadequate oxygen.

Although this condition restricts him in some ways, he doesn’t let it affect his ability to do all the things he loves. The wheelchair that he uses allows him to communicate with his friends and family by providing words and thoughts onto the screen.
