A new affordable housing option will soon be coming to McKinney courtesy in part to North Collin County Habitat for Humanity.

The 35-unit townhome complex is one of the first of its kind in the United States, which will utilize shipping containers to make a 1,200 sq. ft. townhouse with three bedrooms and two baths.

“We have chosen this model due to the increase in cost and availability of land,” North Collin County Habitat for Humanity Chief Executive Officer Celeste Cox said. “With this townhouse design, we are able to get more units into a smaller piece of land.”

The complex called The Cotton Groves is located on 2.75 acres on the corner of Bumpas Street and Fitzhugh Street on the eastside of McKinney. The innovative housing development was developed as a solution to a problem that habitat has been facing: a more affordable way to serve more families in Collin County.

“The Cotton Groves project is a great example of a new concept in urban development for affordable housing,” Cox said.
