Administrators at Farmersville Junior High School have a unique way of preparing students for high school and encouraging good grades: eighth graders get to compete for the titles of “valedictorian” and “salutatorian” four years before most other students do.
Ian Cortez took the top spot this year and Mariana Arteaga took the second. They earned their rankings by having the highest combined averages for their core classes (English, math, science and history) for the first five grading periods this past year.
