Coping with PTSD on the homefront

by | Jun 15, 2017 | Latest

This year’s speaker for Audie Murphy Day will be Vietnam veteran Ron Brown who will share about PTSD and how family and friends can identify symptoms. Art provided by FHS art students.

A veteran sits across the table from family, their time in combat a far distant memory. Until a medical helicopter flies overhead, the sound transporting them back to their time in a far away land, opening a cabinet full of dark memories.

Then once again, they are sitting at the table with family, eating dinner again, the memories shut firmly behind the cabinet doors.

This is a brief glimpse of what a PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) flashback may look like. At this year’s Audie Murphy Day, which will be held Saturday, June 17, PTSD will be the focus. Farmersville VFW Post Quartermaster and Vietnam veteran Ron Brown will be the guest speaker at the program scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. at the Onion Shed.

Brown has his own past and journey to share, but on Audie Murphy Day he has a single goal: to educate friends and family of veterans on signs to look for regarding PTSD.

“Nobody comes back the same,” Brown said, about serving time in the military. “You may not have physical scars, but the mental ones are often there.”
