Results canvassed, mayor files lawsuit

by | May 15, 2018 | Latest

On the eve of canvassing the May 5 election results, Mayor Diane Piwko has hired the Saraiya Law Firm in Farmersville to challenge the results of the mayoral election.

The unofficial results were canvassed at the May 15 city council meeting.

In official election results from Collin County, Rice received 221 votes and Piwko received 217 votes.

For Place 2 city council, Mason received 269 votes, Angie Rios received 159 votes and John Garcia, who had officially withdrawn from the race though his name remained on the ballot, received 14 votes. For Place 4 city council, Hurst received 315 votes and challenger John Klostermann received 121 votes.

“Due to the exceedingly close results in this year’s mayoral race our client Mrs. Diane Piwko has asked our firm to investigate certain irregularities in the voting process. In order to fully investigate these issues we have requested and obtained a temporary order restraining the city from declaring a winner,” Attorney Nicole Manning said. “This action was taken on behalf of Mrs. Piwko and the citizens of Farmersville. We intend to insure all valid votes are counted properly to safe guard the sanctity of our Democratic process.”

Both Piwko and Rice refused to comment on the subject of the injunction.
