Ninth grade Community ISD students, Karly Price and Trinity Snyder, hosted a seatbelt safety week at Nesmith Elementary, McClendon Elementary, Edge Middle school, and Community High School last month as part of FCCLA star event National Programs in Action Jr.
Students wore red in honor of seatbelt awareness, learned about seatbelt safety then took a seatbelt safety quiz and seatbelt safety pledge.
After the program the girls conducted a survey at Edge Middle school to see if the students had learned about seatbelt safety. The survey included notating those wearing their seatbelt (drop-off lane) or putting on their seatbelts (pick up lane). Also, they recorded the driver of the car and how many passengers were in the vehicle.
As a result, the survey data showed the girls teaching of seatbelt safety had reached the students and families of Community ISD. At the Region III FCCLA meeting in Waco last month Karly and Trinity received first place in their category and a $750 TxDOT Road Safety Award.
The duo advanced to the FCCLA state meeting which will be in Dallas April 4-6.
“We are very proud of all of Karly’s and Trinity’s hard work in promoting seatbelt safety. Maybe the life saved one day will be yours,” FCCLA Advisor Blair Young said.
