As part of planned improvements to county facilities, construction is underway for six projects scheduled to be completed between 2024 and 2026.
Construction crews have begun the first of six building projects scheduled for Collin County in the next four years, including improvements and expansion for the county jail and relocating the county’s health care services and medical examiner into new buildings on the main campus.
A new book-in and housing building for the jail is first on the list, with a two-story, 90,000-square-foot building designed to handle projected processing needs for the Collin County Sheriff’s Office for the next 25 years.
The first floor will be the new book-in area for processing inmates and contain enough stations to double the intake ability of the current area. The second floor contains housing units that will hold 180 beds that will be used for orientation of newly processed inmates or for permanent housing.
Funding for the jail project comes from the 2007 facilities bond package.
The remaining five projects include a new central plant, new facilities for the county’s health department and the medical examiner and added parking. A new 450-bed infirmary for the county jail is also in the works.
The other projects are being funded through American Rescue Plan dollars received as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
