Experienced offensive line leads Farmers’ offense

by | Jun 15, 2023 | Sports

Farmersville is hoping to bounce back in a new season in 2023, with plenty to look forward to in the new year.

As one of the youngest teams in District 5-4A last season, Farmersville suffered some growing pains on the way to an 0-6 season. Part of the benefit of a young team, however, is they eventually grow up. That’s something head coach Zac Quinlan and the coaching staff are looking toward in 2023, with a senior-heavy roster.

“We’ve got a lot of guys coming back, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” Quinlan said. “We’re not going to be bigger than anybody in our district, but we’ve now got experience which helps.”

The embodiment of that faith is on the offensive line, where multiple multi-year starters return for the Farmers’ offense. With so many returning faces, Quinlan believes that the group will be the strength of the team, and is filled with several leaders in the locker room.

“There’s a lot to like with that group and they’ve been vocal leaders on the team for a lot of the offseason,” Quinlan said. “We’re excited about the options we have and six kids on our line that will have a ton of experience preparing for the next level.”

Returning to the fold are three seniors for the Farmers, led by Tate Quinlan, Diego Capetillo and Callen Phelps. Quinlan and Capetillo were both second-team all-district players last season for Farmersville. All three seniors represent leaders in the Farmers’ leadership council, communicating with the coaching staff.

“The big question for our team is going to be where our depth is going to come from,” Quinlan said. “We got guys who can move around the ball and play at multiple positions. The key for us is that one of our six guys is going to start on defense, and finding guys who can back them up and still be successful.”

They’ll be joined by junior Tayshaun Davis, an honorable mention player and third-year starter for the Farmers and fellow juniors Jackson Latimer and Orasio Juarez. All six players got reps last season, providing the foundation for the Farmersville offense.

“Even the juniors on our roster have almost as much experience as the seniors, given that they’ve been with the team for three years now,” Quinlan said. “Tayshaun and Jackson are really talented players and they’ve been working with each other for years now.”
