Not much has stopped the Lady Farmers volleyball team this season, as they’ve rolled through the beginning of non-district play.
Taking the No. 1 spot in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll this week, as Farmersville sits at 17-0 through two weeks of the season. Opening the week with their first home match of the season, Farmersville defeated Edgewood 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-22). Following a dominant first set, the Lady Farmers faced their first bit of adversity this season, trailing in both the second and third sets, before coming out on top at the end of both sets.
Moments like that impressed head coach Arian May, who believes this team is playing well, but still has plenty of room for improvement.
“I really think the girls have bought in 100 percent to what we’re teaching,” May said. “Our theme is grit and I believe they are following that theme and giving it all they have on the floor. They fought hard to get the win and they’re scrappy.”
The Lady Farmers’ defense showed up in a big way during the victory, particularly from middle blockers Cayla Huff and Peighton Purser. Both had several blocks in the win and were impressed with their defensive capabilities early in the season.
“They are doing what was asked of them,” May said. “They are doing a great job defensively, and if we can get them going offensively, we’re going to be really tough to beat going forward.”
Still, Farmersville faced troubles in the final two sets, but it was able to overcome those moments. Through 17 games this season, the team is a perfect 36-0 in sets for the year and hasn’t shown signs of slowing down.
“A big thing for us, one of our big team goals, is to regain focus whenever we lose it during a set,” May said. “Something the girls talked about is personally understanding when they need to regroup and stay focused. They chose to fight through adversity, whether the refs make a call they do or don’t agree with, and keep playing and fighting for points.”
Offensively, the Lady Farmers relied heavily on senior Rendi Fetty to get the majority of their points, with Sophia White setting her up for the majority of the match. That senior duo will be the primary attacking option throughout the year and hope to continue to mesh as the season goes on.
Over the weekend, Farmersville traveled to Denison and Sherman for the Highway 75 tournament on Thursday-Saturday, winning all nine games over the weekend.
On day one of the tournament, the Lady Farmers beat Sherman, Tioga and Whitewright. On day two, they knocked off Denison, Howe and Pilot Point. On the final day, they defeated Bells, S&S and Denton Calvary to make it a perfect 9-0 weekend. Farmersville didn’t drop a set over the tournament, impressing over the weekend in dominant fashion.
As the team continues to get better throughout the season, the team is still finding ways to get better early in the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the 4A classification. The Lady Farmers want to improve their attack, especially as they prepare for the bigger games ahead and a tough district championship defense.
“Defensively we were really solid, but there were a few positioning things to get better at,” May said. “Offensively we want to diversify our attack. Rendi is a tremendous offensive player, but we are relying on her a lot. If we can spread out about 10 kills a game, it’ll go a long way.”
Farmersville travels to Aubrey tonight for their next non-district game, followed by a trip to Edgewood this weekend for a tournament. The Lady Farmers have two more weeks of non-district matches before district play begins on Sep. 8.
