The Farmersville baseball team came into last week on the outside of the playoff picture.

Luckily for the Farmers, two games against 1-19 Wills Point helped Farmersville to get it back into a playoff spot.

Farmersville scored 23 runs over the two-game series to post a sweep of Wills Point, beginning with a 9-7 win March 31 before finishing the week with a 14-6 rout of the Tigers on Thursday.

The Farmers needed one inning to seize control of Thursday’s game.

A defensive error by a Wills Point player with two outs extended the bottom of the first inning, and Farmersville made the Tigers pay for the miscue. Sophomore Brandt Martinez made it 1-0 Farmers with an RBI single that he dropped into left field. Then, back-to-back errors by Wills Point plated two more runs for Farmersville, which took a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers scratched a run in the top of the second after Vincent Ciancio was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but that momentum was short-lived. Farmersville responded by scoring eight runs in the home half of the second to take a commanding 11-1 lead.

A two-run triple by Will Shirley as well as RBI singles by Carlo Vanegas and Martinez highlighted the eight-run outburst. The Farmers also took advantage of four errors by the Tigers, with the third miscue bringing across the eighth run of the inning for Farmersville.

Shirley collected three hits and two RBIs to pace an 11-hit attack for Farmersville. The Nos. 2-5 hitters in the Farmers’ lineup combined for nine RBIs. Vanegas had two RBIs and scored twice.

Farmersville used four pitchers with Brady Aungst notching the win. He struck out one against two hits and two runs (one earned) through three innings. Mason Day, Sebastian Redwine and Camden Anderson also pitched for the Farmers.

In the series opener, Farmersville took a 9-3 lead in the fourth inning before surviving a furious rally by Wills Point.

A five-run top of the second proved to be the difference – an outburst that came after Wills Point had taken a 2-1 lead in the home half of the first inning, with both runs coming on Farmersville miscues. The Farmers, though, quickly regrouped and scored five runs in the top of the second. An RBI ground-out by Jackson Hornbuckle gave the Farmers a 6-2 lead.

Vanegas accounted for two of the six hits for Farmersville and also drove in two runs.

Shirley picked up the pitching win, allowing three runs (zero earned) against four hits with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Redwine and Anderson also pitched for Farmersville. They combined for eight strikeouts.

With the two wins, Farmersville (4-5 in District 13-4A) moved into a tie with Sunnyvale (4-5) for fourth place in 13-4A.

The Farmers will play a two-game series next week. The first game, set for April 14, will be played at Sunnyvale. The April 17 series finale is at Farmersville. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 7 p.m., while the second game will begin at 7:15 p.m.
