Community Bulletin: Week of 11/5

by | Nov 13, 2020 | Sports

This week was an eventful week for Community athletics. The Braves clinched a spot in the football playoffs, ending their volleyball season in the regional quarterfinals and starting up their girls basketball season. Here is a recap of everything that happened this week.

11/5: Lady Braves volleyball loses to Gilmer in regional quarterfinals.

Playing at Sulphur Springs Thursday, Nov. 5, the Lady Braves had the opportunity to move to the regional semifinals with a win over Gilmer. The cards weren’t in their favor, however, as they lost to the Lady Buckeyes in five sets 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Against Gilmer, the Lady Braves had an issue stopping the senior duo of Haylee Jordan and Reese Couture. Jordan had a great all-around game, finishing with 13 kills, six blocks and 11 digs. Couture was second on the team in kills with nine, also recording three service aces and eight digs.

With the win, Gilmer will face Aubrey in the regional semifinals.

11/6: Girls basketball opens season with win over Greenville

A day after volleyball’s loss, the Lady Braves hosted their first basketball game of the season, defeating the Greenville Lady Lions 56-35. Community will return home Friday, Nov. 13 to face the Bonham Lady Warriors starting at 6:15 p.m. The Lady Braves open district play Dec. 11, traveling to play the Farmersville Lady Farmers.

11/7: Community football clinches playoff spot with victory over Wills Point

Entering their final game of the regular season, Community had their postseason opportunity up for grabs, clinching the fourth place spot in the district with a win over Wills Point.

Playing at home, the Braves were able to jump out early on the Tigers, scoring on their first six possessions of the game to lead at half 42-3. Despite allowing Wills Point to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Braves were able to hang on and win 44-23.

The Brave of the game is quarterback Paul Testa, who had a great passing effort. Testa completed five of his eight passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to receiver Ty Simpkins. Tailback Jonathan Norris was the leading rusher for Community, finishing with seven carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

After making the playoffs, Community will travel to Glen Rose to square off in the bi-district round of the playoffs Friday, Nov. 13.
