VAN ALSTYNE — Panthers senior quarterback Brayden Miller accounted for five rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead 1-yard run with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and Van Alstyne held on to defeat Farmersville 43-37 at Panthers Stadium on Thursday.
Farmersville (5-3 overall, 2-2 District 5-4A Division II) took a 34-21 lead when senior Christian Aguilar made a 46-yard field goal with 2:38 left in the third quarter — a score that was set up by a fumble recovery by senior Gordon Swartz deep in Van Alstyne territory.
Aguilar made field goals of 39, 46 and 25 yards, with the 25-yarder giving Farmersville a 37-35 lead with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter.
After Miller scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 37 seconds left, followed by a successful 2-point conversion pass from Miller to junior Cayden Benedict, Farmersville had a chance to drive for the winning score.
The Farmers quickly drove inside the red zone. Farmersville junior quarterback Levi McAbee threw a pass over the middle to junior Amare Warren on the final play of the game, but they came up 18 yards short of the end zone.
McAbee finished with two touchdown passes, while senior running back Marquis Oshodi had touchdown runs of 54 and 88 yards, both in the second quarter.
