After a second-place showing at last weekend’s Dr. Pepper Classic at Caddo Mills, the Farmersville boys basketball team was on the receiving end of recognition from one of the state’s coaches associations.
The Farmers (8-1) are off to one of their best starts in program history. For it, Farmersville was ranked No. 23 in this week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll.
Although Farmersville’s undefeated start came to an end Saturday following an 87-79 loss to Class 4A’s No. 12 Paris in the title game, the Farmers showed that they can hang with the best in the state.
The Farmers got another strong performance from their junior class in the loss to the Wildcats. Smith poured in a team-high 33 points. Koby Chavez contributed 21 points. Devin Swain Jr. finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Overall, Farmersville went 4-1 at the Dr. Pepper Classic.
To begin the tournament, Farmersville defeated Greenville for the second time this season. Smith poured in 21 points, and Chavez added 15 in a 77-54 triumph over the Lions.
Farmersville was tested by Liberty-Eylau in its next game, but the Farmers did just enough to earn a hard-fought 74-65 win over the Leopards. Smith turned in another outstanding shooting performance, finishing with 38 points on 14-of-29 shooting from the field and adding five steals. Chavez posted 19 points.
The Farmers concluded pool play with a 79-66 win over an unnamed team.
In the semifinals, Farmersville cruised to a 71-39 win over Van Alstyne for its sixth win by at least 20 points. Chavez (20 points), Swain Jr. (13), and Smith (10) all reached double figures in scoring in the win.
On the girls’ side, Farmersville (6-3) saw a three-game win streak come to an end in a 42-31 road loss at Edgewood last Friday.
