After losing its first game in the Farmersville Hardwood Hoopfest tournament, the Farmersville girls basketball team won its three remaining games to capture the silver bracket title.
The turnaround began with a dominant 66-32 win over Gainesville later Thursday.
After a close first quarter, Farmersville outscored Gainesville 18-15 in the second quarter to gain separation. The Lady Farmers took a 49-28 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Lady Leopards 15-10 in the third.
Senior Rileigh Blankenship rode hot shooting to finish with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Mathews added 16 points. Senior Kali Phillips poured in nine points, followed by seven from senior Jachael Pearson.
Farmersville made it two straight wins with a defensive-minded 36-28 victory over Dodd City last Friday.
The Lady Farmers’ ability to draw contact played a key role. Farmersville went 11-of-15 at the free-throw line, with Mathews accounting for nine attempts. She finished with 13 points. Senior Alexia Hernandez, who went a perfect 4-of-4 at the line, contributed eight points.
Dodd City was limited to eight field goals.
Last Saturday, Farmersville rode a fast start to a 30-29 win over Van Alstyne.
Pearson and Mathews powered the Lady Farmers early, combining for all 13 of Farmersville’s first-quarter points. Mathews scored nine of her 13 points in the opening quarter, while Pearson netted all four of hers during that stretch.
McRay contributed six points.
Farmersville (11-4) led 13-9 after the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime, then held on for the win despite scoring just eight points in the second half.
