It’s been a successful start to the season for the Farmersville boys and girls basketball teams, and both teams continued their winning ways last week.
Despite scoring a season-low 58 points, the state-ranked Farmersville boys did more than enough to earn a 58-52 road win against Van last Friday.
The Farmers, ranked No. 23 in last week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll, improved to 15-1 with the win while earning their seventh consecutive victory.
There was no shortage of offense just three days prior in a dominant 98-75 road win over Grand Saline on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
Farmersville didn’t need long to find its offensive rhythm. The Farmers set the tone with a 34-point first-quarter explosion, and they never looked back in cruising to the 24-point victory.
Farmersville led 57-29 at halftime.
Junior guard Christian Smith scored 40 points on 18-of-33 shooting from the field to carry the offensive load and added eight steals. Junior guard Koby Chavez shot 50% from the field, netting 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 7-of-14 from 3-point range.
Devin Swain Jr. came up one rebound short of a double-double. The Farmersville junior netted 17 points and nine rebounds while also chipping in two blocks. Sophomore forward Tavian Smith contributed seven points and made all three of his shot attempts.
Defense was on full display by the Farmersville girls basketball team that same night in a 36-19 victory against Ranchview.
The Lady Farmers held the Lady Wolves to five field goals for the entire game and to eight points or fewer in all four quarters, including just three points in the second and fourth quarters.
The separation that Farmersville needed came in the second quarter when the Lady Farmers outscored the Lady Wolves 15-3 after leading by just two points, 7-5, at the end of the first quarter.
Senior Katelynn McRay netted nine points to pace a balanced offensive attack for Farmersville. Senior Gali Mathews scored five of her eight points in the second quarter. Senior point guard Alexia Hernandez added five points, followed by five from senior Rileigh Blankenship.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for Farmersville (12-4) and its ninth in its last 11 games.
The Lady Farmers are off for the holiday break and are scheduled to return to the court at 12:15 p.m. Dec. 30 at Farmersville Arena for a non-district game against Bonham.
Farmersville’s boys basketball team will be in action Dec. 29-31 at the Allen In-N-Out Holiday Tournament. The Farmers will open play at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 29 against North Lamar.
