The battle to earn one of the four playoff spots in District 13-4A will likely come down to the final week of the regular season. With only two games separating first place from fifth, Farmersville’s baseball team knows every game from here on will be crucial.

A 14-1 win over Quinlan Ford (3-2 in district), which sits above Farmersville (2-3) in the standings, could go a long way toward boosting the Farmers’ playoff chances last Friday.

Walker Liebert led the way with a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. A two-run single in the second inning gave Farmersville a 7-0 lead. He added an RBI single in the fourth and drove in three more runs with another one-base hit in the fifth.

Farmersville jumped out to an early lead when Will Shirley got the Farmers on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. A six-run second inning extended the lead to 7-0. Shirley and Brady Aungst each had two hits, with Shirley driving in two runs and drawing a walk. Aungst also excelled on the mound, allowing one run with eight strikeouts over four innings.

The win came three days after Farmersville was held to three hits by Sunnyvale in a 2-0 home loss. Shirley struck out eight over six innings while allowing two runs and six hits. Farmersville couldn’t score against Sunnyvale pitcher Cole Cornstubble, who yielded three hits over six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Eli Grubbs pitched a scoreless seventh.

On Saturday, Farmersville fell 10-4 in a non-district game at Ponder. Carlo Vanegas drove in two runs with a double in the first to give Farmersville a 2-0 lead. But the Farmers didn’t score again until the seventh and trailed 10-2 by then. Camden Anderson and Seth Brooks combined for effective pitching, but six errors hampered the effort. Ponder tied the game 2-2 in the first before breaking it open with an eight-run sixth inning.

In softball, Farmersville struggled in a 16-1 loss to Caddo Mills on March 17. The Lady Farmers managed just three hits, with the only run coming when Presley McIver scored on an error in the fourth inning. McIver had led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out before crossing home.

Caddo Mills scored 10 runs in the top of the first to seize control and also got four hits with six RBIs from Liberty States. States also starred on the mound, striking out four against three hits.

Farmersville will host Quinlan Ford at 6:30 p.m. Friday. That same night, the baseball team will conclude a two-game series at Caddo Mills, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m.
