Farmersville took care of business in a must-win opener, earning a 5-3 victory over Sunnyvale. However, the Raiders regrouped and shut the Farmers 6-0 in Friday’s rematch.

In the April 14 series opener at Sunnyvale, Farmersville was held to three hits but came through when it mattered most.

Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth inning, the Farmers finally broke through. A two-run single by Brady Aungst tied the score at 2-2.

Sunnyvale retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly, but Farmersville didn’t back down.

Down to its final strike in the top of the seventh, Camden Anderson battled back after falling behind 0-2 in the count and drew a walk. He scored moments later after a Sunnyvale outfielder committed an error, tying the game at 3-3.

Farmersville went ahead for good in the eighth. The Farmers plated the go-ahead run and a fielder’s choice by Brandt Martinez increased Farmersville’s advantage to 5-3.

“Cam’s at bat was great,” head coach Jon Nordin said. “He fell behind 0-2 and just dug in and battled. He took the balls and spoiled the strikes and ended up on first base. I was really happy for both of those guys (Anderson and Reece Tuck). It seems like we always have some seniors come through at this time of year, so hopefully that was the start of a good couple of weeks.”

A key reason the game went to extra innings was the pitching of Farmersville left-hander Mason Day.

Sunnyvale took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Hudson Leonard hit a solo home run, but Day regrouped and did not allow another run. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with six strikeouts over seven innings. Sebastian Redwine, a sophomore, tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning with one strikeout to close out the win.

“Mason was outstanding,” Nordin said. “When he’s in the strike zone, he gives us a good chance, and he threw more strikes than he has in any outing to this point.”

Farmersville improved to 5-8 in District 13-4A.
