The Farmersville baseball team showed a lot of resolve this season, using a late-season surge to overcome a tough start to District 13-4A play to qualify for the playoffs for the 12th consecutive season.
Although the Farmers’ season came to an end in the bi-district round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs, it was another successful year on the field for Farmersville. Because of its overall team success as well as strong individual efforts, coaches in District 13-4A rewarded the Farmers with five total selections on the all-district team.
Sophomore first baseman Will Shirley was placed on the first team. Shirley concluded a strong sophomore season by leading Farmersville in batting average (.410), hits (16), doubles (five), RBIs (nine) and runs (14). He also provided a reliable arm for the Farmers’ pitching staff. He went 2-2 and struck out 21 in 15 innings while allowing eight earned runs.
Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Sebastian Redwine, sophomore third baseman Brady Aungst and senior pitcher Mason Day were named to the second team. Junior catcher Carlo Vanegas was placed on the honorable-mention team.
Redwine finished his second season donning a Farmers uniform with a .277 batting average, 13 hits, seven RBIs, eight runs, six stolen bases and four walks. On the mound, he had one win and one save in 20.1 innings with 22 strikeouts, six earned runs and 10 walks.
Aungst collected 11 hits, including four doubles, to accompany five RBIs, 10 runs, 10 walks and two stolen bases. He had two hits in a 5-2 win over Quinlan Ford on Friday, April 24, in the final regular season game for Farmersville.
Day went 2-2 on the mound with 24 strikeouts and 14 earned runs in 29 2/3 innings to go along with a 3.30 earned-run average. He delivered in a key outing against Sunnyvale, striking out six in seven innings – a game that Farmersville won 5-3 that served as the spark to help the Farmers finish the regular season strong and qualify for the postseason.
Vanegas finished second on the Farmers in batting average (.333) and hits (14), including three doubles and one triple, to accompany eight RBIs, eight runs and eight walks.
Two individual awards were also presented by the coaching staff following the conclusion of the season. Senior Jackson Hornbuckle was chosen for the Fighting Heart Award, while senior Nate Clark claimed the Most Valuable Player Award.
