Five Farmers qualify for area meet

by | Apr 18, 2022 | Latest, Sports

At the 13-4A District Championships, the Farmersville Farmers saw a few top performers qualify for the area meet.

Racing against six other district schools, the Lady Farmers finished fifth overall with 41 points. They placed behind Kaufman (223 points), Sunnyvale (131.5 points), Terrell (120 points) and Caddo Mills (77 points).

The boys’ track team struggled, finishing in last place with 11 points. Kaufman also won the boys meet, finishing with a dominant 256 points.

With the top four in each event qualifying for the area championship, Farmersville will be sending two athletes and one relay team to the area meet. Leading the way for Farmersville was Aubrey Varner, who qualified in two events. She was the winner of the 400-meter race (1:02.48), beating out Kaydee Bennett of Caddo Mills (1:02.83).

Varner doubled her total with a top-three finish in the 800 (2:30.83), narrowly losing out to Kaufman’s Kathryn Tucker (2:28.55) and Katharine Elzner (2:29.47).

Along with finishing first overall individually, Varner helped the Farmersville 4×400-meter relay team qualify with a fourth-place finish (4:16.03). Alexi Atchinson, Reagan Searson and Jeniel Soto were also members of the group who finished narrowly behind Caddo Mills (4:15.36), Kaufman (4:14.87) and Terrell (4:09.24).

The other top runner for the Lady Farmers was Baylee Valliant, who placed third in the 200-meter dash (26.35). After finishing behind Sunnyvale’s Emma Tindall (26.34) and Terrell’s JaNaria Jackson (24.10).

Farmersville’s track qualifiers will compete Thursday at Sunnyvale High School for the area meet.
