The Farmersville girls basketball team was unable to overcome 24 turnovers and second-chance scoring opportunities by Pleasant Grove in a 43-32 loss in Farmersville Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
There were times when the Lady Farmers struggled to get the ball past half court. Pleasant Grove suffocated Farmersville with its full-court press and forced several errant passes. But in spite of those struggles, the Lady Farmers took a 6-2 lead after sophomore Peighton Purser converted a jump shot off a broken play just over halfway through the first quarter.
Pleasant Grove rallied with a 7-2 run to take a 9-8 lead.
The deficit could’ve been more for Farmersville, but an 0-of-6 showing at the free-throw line in the opening quarter by Pleasant Grove kept it at a one-point lead for the Lady Hawks.
Pleasant Grove led 15-11 at halftime.
The Lady Hawks proceeded to assume control in the third quarter.
Pleasant Grove made four 3-pointers over that span of play and went up by as much as 28-16.
Farmersville scored the last five points of the third quarter, all by junior Rileigh Blankenship. Blankenship scored eight points in the frame, the last two coming on a layup that came off a Farmersville steal.
That reduced Farmersville’s deficit to 28-21.
Junior Katelynn McRay brought the Lady Farmers to within 32-27 with 4:47 left in the game after she made a 3-pointer from the right corner.
Blankenship and McRay each had eight points.
However, Pleasant Grove made seven free throws over the final four minutes of the ballgame to seal the road win.
