Fall athletes honored at banquet

Although the fall sports season for the Farmersville football and volleyball teams ended more than a month ago, coaches and players took time to reminisce of all the good times together on the football field, volleyball court, cross country course and tennis courts while also handing out individual awards during the school’s fall sports banquet on Monday, Dec. 9.

Six players from the Lady Farmers volleyball team were presented with presented with team awards.

Junior defensive specialist Alexia Hernandez and senior outside hitter Kenah Brown were recipients of the Fightin Farmer award. Brown, a second-team, all-District 13-4A honoree, finished her final season in a Lady Farmers uniform with 97 kills, 83 digs and 19 blocks. 

Defensive player of the year went to senior defensive specialist Margo Ingram. Ingram, a first-team all-13-4A honoree, recorded 39 aces, 271 digs and 60 assists this season.

Sophomore outside hitter Peighton Purser and sophomore utility Rylie Cottongame shared co-offensive player of the year. Purser was Farmersville’s go-to hitter on the front row. Purser finished her sophomore season with 526 kills, 58 aces, 317 digs, 20 blocks and 36 assists. Cottongame, meanwhile, elevated her and became a great all-around player for the Lady Farmers. This fall, she tallied 76 aces, 304 digs, 288 kills, 15 blocks and 744 assists. 

Team MVP was awarded to senior libero Bella Holland. Holland was the vocal leader for the team while providing solid defense and timely offense. She recoded 49 aces, 507 digs, 213 kills, 38 assists and 14 blocks as a senior and later was named the District 13-4A libero of the year.

Nine awards were handed out to the Farmersville football team.

Farmersville senior wide receiver/defensive back Drake Grimes was named the team’s most valuable player. Grimes, who transferred from Frisco Memorial to Farmersville last offseason, led the Farmers in receiving yards (1,267) and receiving touchdowns (17). 

Defensive player of the year went to junior defensive end/linebacker Cade Ellis. Ellis always seemed to be around the ball, having logged 135 tackles this season.

Offensive player of the year was won by sophomore quarterback Levi McAbee. In his first season as Farmersville’s starting quarterback, McAbee threw for 2,439 yards and 24 passing touchdowns. The Farmers’ offense averaged 33.91 points per game, Farmersville won eight games and earned their first playoff win since 2016.

Special teams’ player of the year was shared by junior place kicker Christian Aguilar and senior punter Paxon Graves.

The Farmersville Times sportsmanship award was won by senior wide receiver Tristyn Fleuren.

Senior Tay’shaun Davis was named the Farmersville Times’ outstanding defensive lineman. Davis, a four-year varsity player, won the district’s defensive lineman of the year for the second year in a row.

Senior defensive lineman Jackson Latimer won the Farmersville Times’ Farmers Fight award.

The Times’ outstanding offensive lineman award went to senior center Mark Vasquez.

Four runners on the Farmersville cross country were presented with awards.

Senior Bryan Mujica was named boys’ team MVP, while freshman Southern Sanders won girls’ team MVP.

The winner of the cross country Farmers’ Grit Boys of the Year award was senior David Bell, while the Farmers’ Grit Girl of the Year was junior JoJo Murphy.

This fall, Farmersville qualified both their boys’ and girls’ cross country teams for the regional meet in the same year for the first time since 2018.

The Farmers’ tennis team was also recognized at the banquet.

The most valuable player of the girls’ team was shared by seniors Lexi Cook and Addison Schreiner, while juniors Glade Schreiner and Daniel Long won boys’ team co-MVP.

The winners of the “Heart and Hustle” award were juniors Owen Gates and Walker Liebert.
