Community mourns passing of resident, former mayor

by | Jan 9, 2025 | Area news

Following a three-year battle with cancer, Farmersville is mourning the loss of one of its dedicated public servants and community leaders.

Joe Helmberger, a longtime resident and former mayor, passed away at his home on Dec. 23, 2024.

A funeral mass was held on Dec. 27, 2024, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Wylie, where Helmberger was an active member.

Love of community and a commitment to public service were evident in Helmberger’s many leadership roles. He served as Mayor of Farmersville from May 2010 to April 2017, leading the city during a period of growth and change.

His contributions extended far beyond the mayor’s office, with service on numerous committees and boards throughout Collin County.

His extensive civic engagement included roles on the Farmersville City Council, Farmersville Economic Development Corporation and Farmersville Planning and Zoning Commission. Helmberger also played a pivotal role on the Farmersville Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone Board and the Farmersville Independent School District Board.

His leadership reached a regional level through his work with the Collin County Planning Board, where he served as vice chair in 2015 and chair in 2016, the Texas Water Development Board, and the North Texas Groundwater Conservation District Board, where he was a member from 2015 to 2023.

Beyond government service, Helmberger was deeply involved in community organizations. He held leadership positions in the Wylie and Farmersville Chambers of Commerce, the Farmersville Rotary and Wylie Rotary clubs, and the Farmersville Athletic Association, where he served as president. Helmberger also lent his expertise to various local committees, including the Farmersville Centennial Committee, the Farmersville Annual Trick It Up bike ride committee, and the Farmersville Audie Murphy Day Committee.

A staunch advocate for trails and outdoor activities, Helmberger contributed to the Northeast Texas Trail Board and the Chaparral Trail Board. His faith guided his work with St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he participated in the remodeling and cemetery committees.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Debra Helmberger, seven children, seven grandchildren, family, friends and a community forever changed by his service and generosity.
