Filing begins for city council election

by | Jan 9, 2025 | Latest

The filing period for the city of Farmersville’s May 3, 2025, city council election officially opens Wednesday, Jan. 15.

This marks the beginning of the process for residents interested in running for one of two available city council seats; Place 2, currently held Russ Chandler, and Place 5, held by Lance Hudson.

Election packet pickup officially commenced Wednesday, Jan. 8 said City Secretary Tabitha Monk.

City council members serve three-year terms and are elected at large, meaning they represent the entire city.

Applications can be turned in beginning Wednesday, Jan. 15. Candidates will have until 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 to file an application for candidacy.

Voters can also request absentee ballots starting January 1.

Candidates must be at least 21 years old on the date of the election and must be qualified voters in the city for at least six months immediately prior to the filing date.

They must have resided within the city’s corporate limits for at least 6 months prior to the filing date as well. Candidates may only file for one position in a single election.

Farmersville voters approved term limits which began in May 2023 during the May 2022 city charter election.

According to the city’s charter “no person shall serve as Mayor for more than three consecutive elected terms, and no person shall serve as councilmember for more than three consecutive elected terms. No person shall serve as councilmember and mayor (combined) for more than eighteen consecutive years.”

Chandler was appointed in Oct. 2024 to fill a Place 2 vacancy and Hudson is completing the second of two, two-year terms.

The last day to register to vote or make a change of address effective for the May 3 election is April 3.

Early voting begins April 22 and ends April 29. Voters can also request absentee ballots starting Jan. 1.

For more information, contact Monk at 972-782-6151 or email [email protected].
