It was a historic season on the pitch for the Farmersville boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.
The Lady Farmers won five district matches for their greatest number of district wins in a single season in the eight-year history of the program and they also came within one win of making the playoffs for the first time.
The Farmer boys, meanwhile, overcame a sluggish start to the season after a goalkeeper change and went on to qualify for the postseason for the first time in program history.
All of that success was noticed by the other coaches in District 11-4A.
Farmersville was rewarded with a total of 21 selections on the all-district team, with four players garnering a district superlative.
Junior midfielder Natalie Taylor won utility player of the year after she led the Lady Farmers in scoring with 20 goals to accompany seven assists. The Farmers won utility player of the year in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Junior midfielder/goalkeeper Daniel Mendoza captured that top individual honor on the boys’ side after scoring nine goals with six assists while playing half of the district minutes at goalkeeper.
Sophomore defenseman Syah Surles was named the District 11-4A girls’ newcomer of the year.
Second-year Lady Farmers head coach Krystal Mikeska was honored with coach of the year after helping to continue to lead an improving Farmersville program.
Taylor and Surles were also named to the first team for their efforts on the pitch, as well as senior midfielder/forward Yireida Hernandez and senior utility Morgan Cobb.
Sophomore defenseman Aberlie Marsh and senior defenseman Ashlynn Clark were selected to the second team.
Clark scored the game-winning goal for the Lady Farmers in 3-2 win over Frisco Panther Creek on Feb. 17 –a win that Mikeska said was the biggest win in program history; the Lady Panthers came into the game ranked in the top 10 in Class 4A.
Earning honorable-mention team honors for Farmersville were junior forward Kimberly Cuellar and freshman Gwen Pangle.
On the boys’ side, junior midfielder Christian Aguilar, sophomore midfielder/goalkeeper Jairo Acosta and senior midfielder Michael Vasquez were placed on the first team.
Acosta scored three goals in a 9-1 win for Farmersville over Bonham on March 1 that clinched the first playoff berth in program history for the Farmers.
Earning their way onto the all-District 11-4A team from Farmersville were sophomore defenders Gustavo Ramos and Kevin Jurado and junior defenseman Yoan Pineda.
Junior midfielder Juan Vargas, sophomore defenseman Luke Lair and freshman midfielder Felix Maldanado were named to the honorable mention team.
