A decades-old tradition continued this Memorial Day weekend as community members gathered at Thompson Cemetery in Lavon Saturday, May 25, for a solemn service honoring those who gave their lives in service to the nation.

The annual event, held at 2:30 p.m., featured a flag-raising ceremony conducted by members of the Farmersville VFW Post 7426 — a role the post has proudly upheld for the past 19 years. Participating members included Commander Jason Bunting, Quartermaster Ronald Brown, Junior Vice Commander Dan Rector, Dennis Moore and Ryan Boykin.

The Memorial Service was held under the tabernacle restored several years ago by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. The tabernacle itself has served the community for more than 70 years. Linda Hess, a longtime attendee, recalled attending services there as a child.
